Finding Meaning in Forgotten Things
The idea of spiritual thrifting may sound too good to be true, but I have to admit — this is something I truly enjoy. It’s not about going “cheap”; it’s about the hunt for a treasure. One woman’s treasure is another woman’s discard, and somehow that feels like part of the magic.
There is something almost sacred about walking into a space filled with objects that once belonged to someone else’s life. Creative thoughts begin to flow, and I often find myself drawn to pieces I never would have considered before. The most satisfying finds are often the ones that will be used in a completely different way than originally intended.
“There is something sacred about finding beauty where others may not think to look.”
Perhaps the spirituality comes from the sense of openness — the willingness to see beauty where others may not. I have noticed that when I am searching for something specific, it often seems to appear at just the right time. A few months ago, I was hoping to find a particular book, but didn’t want to pay the online price. About a week into my search, there it was, waiting quietly on a thrift store shelf. Moments like that feel like gentle reminders that what we seek often finds its way to us.
Sometimes the things we search for externally mirror what we are seeking internally — reassurance that beauty still exists, that meaning can be gathered slowly, and that not everything of value needs to be brand-new.
I am not an exclusive thrifter, but I find that many of the clothing pieces I bring home tend to receive the most compliments. I am especially drawn to items with a vintage feel — coats, in particular, seem to find their way into my wardrobe.
Tableware is often the first place I look. There is something special about discovering just the right plate, bowl, or serving piece to add character to a dinner table. These pieces carry history, and when we use them, they become part of our own story as well.
If you feel inspired, take a walk through your local thrift store and see what treasures might be waiting for you.
As someone once said, not all treasures are silver and gold. Beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder.
Go, find a treasure for yourself today.

This is a special treasure I found when I needed a reminder. 🙂
Each treasure gathered now feels like a small step toward the Inn I am to create someday — a place where objects with history help tell a story of welcome, connection, and gracious living.
